Praia Entry Requirements

Visa, immigration, and customs information

Important Notice Entry requirements can change at any time. Always verify current requirements with official government sources before traveling.
Information last reviewed December 2024. Always verify with official government sources before traveling as entry requirements can change.
Praia, the capital city of Cape Verde (Cabo Verde), is located on Santiago Island and serves as the main entry point for international travelers visiting this Atlantic archipelago nation. Cape Verde operates a relatively straightforward entry system for tourists, with most visitors able to obtain pre-arrival registration online. The country has modernized its immigration procedures in recent years, implementing an electronic registration system (EASE) that has streamlined the arrival process at Nelson Mandela International Airport, the main gateway to Praia. All travelers to Cape Verde, regardless of nationality, must complete a pre-arrival registration and pay a security fee before departure. This system replaced the previous visa-on-arrival process and has made entry more efficient. Upon arrival at Praia, visitors will proceed through immigration control where officers verify travel documents, the pre-registration confirmation, and the purpose of visit. The process is generally smooth for tourists with proper documentation. Travelers should ensure their passport is valid for at least six months beyond their intended stay and have proof of accommodation, return or onward tickets, and sufficient funds for their visit. Cape Verde's tourism infrastructure has grown significantly, and immigration authorities are accustomed to processing international visitors. However, it's essential to complete all pre-arrival requirements to avoid delays or complications at the airport.

Visa Requirements

Entry permissions vary by nationality. Find your category below.

Cape Verde requires all international visitors to complete a mandatory pre-arrival registration (EASE) and pay a Tourist Security Tax, regardless of nationality. Traditional visas are generally not required for short tourist stays, but the pre-registration system is mandatory.

Pre-Arrival Registration Required (EASE)

All nationalities must complete online pre-arrival registration. This applies to citizens of ECOWAS countries and all other nationalities visiting for tourism or business.

Includes

How to Apply: Register online at ease.gov.cv at least 5 days before travel (can be done up to 2 days before departure). Complete the form with personal details, travel information, and accommodation details. Pay the security fee online.
Cost: Approximately €31 (about $34 USD) Tourist Security Tax, valid for 30 days

You will receive a confirmation receipt via email that must be presented upon arrival. Keep both digital and printed copies. The registration is linked to your passport number.

Senegal Nigeria Ghana Guinea-Bissau Mali Other ECOWAS member states
How to Apply: Must still complete EASE pre-registration but benefit from ECOWAS free movement protocols

Traditional Visa Required
Varies by visa type

Some nationalities or specific travel purposes may require a traditional visa obtained through Cape Verdean embassy or consulate

How to Apply: Contact the nearest Cape Verdean embassy or consulate. Required for work permits, long-term stays, or certain nationalities. Processing time typically 5-15 business days.

Required for employment, study, or residence purposes. Tourist visitors should use the EASE system instead.

Arrival Process

Upon arrival at Nelson Mandela International Airport in Praia, travelers proceed through a standard immigration and customs process. The airport is modern and well-organized, with clear signage in Portuguese, English, and French.

1
Disembarkation
Exit the aircraft and follow signs to immigration ('Controle de Passaportes'). Keep your passport, EASE confirmation receipt, and completed landing card (if provided on the flight) ready.
2
Immigration Control
Join the appropriate queue (ECOWAS/CEDEAO or All Passports). Present your passport, EASE registration confirmation, and return ticket. Immigration officers will verify your documents, may ask questions about your stay, and stamp your passport.
3
Baggage Claim
Proceed to baggage claim area and collect your luggage. Check the display screens for your flight's carousel number.
4
Customs Declaration
If you have goods to declare, use the red channel. Otherwise, proceed through the green channel (nothing to declare). Officers may conduct random checks.
5
Airport Exit
Exit to the arrivals hall where you'll find currency exchange, ATMs, taxi services, and car rental agencies.

Documents to Have Ready

Valid Passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended departure date from Cape Verde. Must have at least one blank page for entry stamp.
EASE Registration Confirmation
Printed or digital copy of your pre-arrival registration receipt with payment confirmation. This is mandatory for all travelers.

Accommodation Confirmation
Hotel reservation, rental confirmation, or invitation letter if staying with friends/family. Address is required on EASE form.
Proof of Sufficient Funds
Evidence you can support yourself during your stay (credit cards, cash, bank statements). Rarely requested but good to have available.
Yellow Fever Certificate
Required if arriving from or having transited through a yellow fever endemic country within 6 days prior to arrival.

Tips for Smooth Entry

Complete your EASE registration at least 5 days before travel to avoid last-minute issues. Keep confirmation emails accessible on your phone and have a printed copy as backup.
Ensure your passport validity extends well beyond 6 months from your arrival date, as some airlines may deny boarding if it doesn't meet this requirement.
Have your accommodation address readily available as immigration officers may ask for it. The address should match what you entered on your EASE registration.
Exchange some currency before arrival or use ATMs in the airport, as some transportation options outside may not accept foreign currency or cards.
Be patient during peak arrival times as multiple international flights may arrive simultaneously. Immigration queues can take 30-60 minutes during busy periods.
Keep important documents (passport, EASE confirmation, accommodation details) in an easily accessible location rather than packed in checked luggage.
If traveling with medication, keep it in original packaging with prescriptions to avoid customs issues.

Customs & Duty-Free

Health Insurance

Travel health insurance with medical evacuation coverage is strongly recommended but not mandatory for entry. Keep insurance documentation accessible during your trip.

Current Health Requirements: Check current health requirements related to COVID-19 or other emerging health concerns before travel. Requirements may include testing, vaccination certificates, or health declarations. Visit the Cape Verde Ministry of Health website or your country's travel advisory page for the most current information. Some health measures may be implemented on short notice based on global health situations.

Special Situations

Additional requirements for specific circumstances.

Traveling with Children

Children must have their own passport (family passports are not accepted). Minors under 18 traveling without both parents should carry a notarized letter of consent from the non-accompanying parent(s), including contact information and authorizing the child to travel. This letter should be in Portuguese or English. If traveling with only one parent, carry the child's birth certificate and consent letter from the other parent. Divorced or separated parents should carry custody documents. Children are also subject to the EASE pre-registration requirement.

Traveling with Pets

Pets entering Cape Verde require an import permit obtained in advance from the Cape Verdean veterinary authorities. Required documentation includes: valid rabies vaccination certificate (administered at least 30 days but not more than 12 months before travel), health certificate issued by a licensed veterinarian within 10 days of travel, proof of microchip identification, and treatment for parasites. Some breeds may be restricted. Contact the Direção Nacional de Pecuária well in advance of travel (at least 30 days) to obtain permits. Airlines have specific requirements for pet travel that must also be met.

Extended Stays

Tourist stays are initially granted for up to 30 days. Extensions can be requested from the immigration office (Direcção Nacional de Imigração e Fronteiras) in Praia before your authorized stay expires. You'll need to provide justification, proof of accommodation, proof of sufficient funds, and pay extension fees. For stays longer than 90 days or for purposes other than tourism (work, study, residence), you must apply for the appropriate visa or residence permit. Employment requires a work permit obtained by your employer. Student visas require acceptance from a Cape Verdean educational institution. Long-term residence permits have specific requirements based on purpose of stay.

Business Travelers

Business visitors use the same EASE pre-registration system as tourists. Select 'business' as purpose of visit. Carry documentation supporting your business activities: invitation letter from Cape Verdean company or organization, company registration documents, proof of business relationship, and return ticket. Business stays are typically limited to 30 days. For extended business activities or employment, a work permit and appropriate visa are required. Attending conferences or meetings is generally acceptable under tourist/business registration.

Transit Passengers

Passengers transiting through Praia to another destination may not need to complete immigration if staying airside and departing on the same calendar day. However, if leaving the airport or staying overnight, full entry requirements apply including EASE registration. Check with your airline about transit requirements. If you plan to leave the airport during a layover to visit Praia, complete the EASE registration and meet all entry requirements.

Dual Nationals

Travelers holding dual nationality including Cape Verdean citizenship must enter and exit Cape Verde using their Cape Verdean passport. This is strictly enforced. If you have Cape Verdean citizenship (including by descent), contact the Cape Verdean embassy about passport requirements before travel. Using a foreign passport when you hold Cape Verdean nationality may result in entry complications.
