Praia sits at the southern tip of Santiago, Cape Verde's largest and most populous island, and the city's climate follows a pattern that's almost startlingly consistent by tropical standards. The short version: warm and dry for most of the year, with a brief wet season concentrated in late summer and early autumn. Temperatures barely shift across the twelve months. A range of perhaps eight or nine degrees Celsius separates the coolest January night from the hottest October afternoon. That reliability makes Praia an appealing destination for travelers who want steady warmth without the full commitment of equatorial humidity. The dominant influence on the climate here is the northeast trade winds, known locally as the alísios. These winds blow reliably from November through June. They keep humidity from becoming oppressive and nudge temperatures just enough to make an afternoon on the terrace comfortable. From July onwards, the trade winds weaken, Atlantic moisture increases, and Praia enters its so-called rainy season. Calling it that requires some context. September, the wettest month, tends to bring around 76mm of rain. That's modest compared to the year-round totals you'd see in a wet tropical destination. The rain tends to arrive in short, heavy bursts and typically clears within an hour or two. Worth noting is the harmattan, a dusty wind that occasionally blows in from the Sahara between December and February. On harmattan days, the sky takes on a hazy, ochre quality. Visibility drops across the bay. Any washing left outside acquires a fine layer of red-brown dust. It's not constant and it's rarely severe, but it's a real part of the Praia experience that no amount of temperature data captures.

Best Time to Visit

Recommended timing for different travel styles.

Beach
For beach and relaxation, November through May is the sweet spot. The trade winds keep conditions comfortable. The sea is calm on the protected western beaches. There's essentially no rain to contend with. March and April tend to offer the most settled conditions of the whole year.
Cultural
Travelers interested in cultural exploration will find February and March rewarding. The months around Carnival season bring additional life to the streets of Santiago's capital. The weather is dry and not yet at its peak warmth. The evenings are good for walking the Plateau district without feeling pressed indoors.
Adventure
Adventure seekers and hikers should aim for November through April. The surrounding interior of Santiago and the broader highlands are accessible when the ground is dry and firm. The cooler nights mean the effort of a long day's walking doesn't flatten you by mid-afternoon. The landscape after the wet season, from late October onwards, still holds some green before the trade winds dry things out through the following months.
Budget
Budget-minded travelers will find the wet season months of August through October the quietest and typically the most affordable period. Hotel rates ease. Flights from Europe see less demand. The city is noticeably less crowded. The trade-off is real: September brings genuine rain, and the warmth without the trade winds can feel thick. That said, the showers are rarely all-day affairs. A morning at the beach before afternoon clouds roll in is often well possible.

What to Pack

Essentials and seasonal recommendations for Praia.

Year-Round Essentials
High-factor sunscreen (SPF 50 or above)
The UV index in Cape Verde punches far above European expectations. Trade winds trick you. You stay out longer. You burn faster.
A broad-brimmed hat
follows naturally from the same concern
Quality sunglasses with UV protection
follows naturally from the same concern
Lightweight, breathable clothing, linen or technical fabrics
hold up better than heavy cotton against both the warmth and the sea breeze
A reusable water bottle
staying hydrated is easy to neglect when you're not visibly overheating
A portable charger
rounds out the essentials for long days away from hotels
dry season (November through June)
Clothing
a light layer for evenings
Footwear
Closed-toe walking shoes or sturdy sandals
Layering Tip
a light sweater or long-sleeved shirt earns its luggage space
wet season (July through October)
Clothing
a packable waterproof jacket, the kind that compresses into its own pocket
Footwear
Quick-drying sandals or technical footwear
Plug Type
type C and type F plugs (the round two-pin European standard)
Voltage
220-240V, 50Hz
Adapter Note
European plugs fit straight in. North American and British plugs need a travel adapter. North American 110V gear also needs a voltage converter.
Skip These Items
Heavy jeans or thick trousers trap heat. They feel wrong every month. One light smart outfit is enough. Praia eats and parties in casual or smart-casual gear. A full waterproof shell is overkill even in September. Pack a foldable layer instead. Thick-soled hiking boots weigh you down in the city. Bring them only for serious inland hikes on Santiago. Harmattan haze drifts through now and then. A dust mask is overkill. Dust is light by Saharan standards. Stay indoors during the rare heavy burst.
