Praia Entry Requirements

Praia Entry Requirements

Visa, immigration, and customs information

Important Notice Entry requirements can change at any time. Always verify current requirements with official government sources before traveling.
Praia, the ocean-side capital of Cabo Verde, greets arrivals with salty Atlantic gusts and the low hum of Cesária Évora drifting from airport loudspeakers. Immigration queues move quickly beneath murals of volcanic peaks, while officers stamp passports with the scent of fresh ink mixing with roasted coffee drifting in from the café kiosk. Travelers should arrive with printed proof of onward travel, a passport valid for six months beyond entry, and crisp Euro notes for the airport's card-shy vending machines. The process is straightforward: disembark onto the jet bridge that feels like warm tile underfoot, follow the yellow arrows past duty-free shelves of grogue, and present documents at glass-fronted booths where officials ask brisk questions in Portuguese-accented English. Outside, the dry Harmattan breeze carries charcoal smoke from roadside grills, and taxi drivers call out destinations while waving laminated price cards. Baggage carousels squeal against terrazzo floors, and porters in turquoise shirts offer help with a smile that reveals the island's easy cadence. Once through customs, the sliding doors open to reveal a panorama of ochre hills dotted with pastel houses, your first sight of Praia's sloping neighborhoods tumbling toward the harbor.

Visa Requirements

Entry permissions vary by nationality. Find your category below.

Print the ETA bar-code page; mobile screenshots occasionally fail at Wi-Fi dead spots in the arrivals hall.

Embassy Visa
30 days, extendable locally

Nationals not on the above lists must secure a visa in advance from a Cabo Verdean embassy or consulate. Apply at the nearest embassy with passport, photo, accommodation voucher, and proof of funds. Processing averages one week.

Currently no visa-on-arrival facility in Praia for these nationalities.

Arrival Process

Nelson Mandela International Airport, 3 km northeast of downtown Praia, channels passengers through a single-terminal flow that smells faintly of sea salt and aircraft brake-dust.

1
Arrival and Health Check
Walk along the glazed jet bridge where overhead fans push warm air. Thermal cameras check for fever without stopping the line.
2
Immigration
Hand your passport, printed visa or ETA sheet, and return ticket to the officer who may ask purpose of visit while stamping with a resonant thud.
3
Baggage Claim
Carousels clatter under exposed steel rafters. Watch for wrapped bags because high UV can heat dark suitcases.
4
Customs
Choose the green (nothing to declare) or red (goods to declare) aisle; officers occasionally hand-search cases, releasing wafts of roasted corn from street vendors outside.
5
Exit
Exit into a compact hall echoing with Creole greetings, currency-exchange chatter, and the slap of flip-flops on polished concrete.

Documents to Have Ready

Passport
Passport must be valid six months beyond arrival and contain at least one blank page.
Visa or ETA
Visa or ETA print-out required for non-visa-exempt travelers. Digital copies accepted but paper speeds scanning.
Return or Onward Ticket
Return or onward ticket, airline staff check at departure. Immigration may re-verify.
Passenger Locator Form
Passenger Locator Form (if reinstated) previously used during health emergencies. Keep a QR-code screenshot handy.

Tips for Smooth Entry

Carry a pen to complete sudden forms. The immigration desk never has enough.
Exchange a small amount inside the terminal for taxi fare. Rates are mid-range and safer than street changers.

Customs & Duty-Free

Praia's customs limit duty-free imports to personal-use quantities. Anything above must be declared and may draw 20, 40 % duty.

Alcohol
1 bottle (up to 1 litre) of spirits over 22 % or 2 bottles of wine.
Minimum age 18; officers may sniff open bags for excess bottles.
Tobacco
200 cigarettes or 50 cigars or 250 g loose tobacco.
Products must carry health-warning pictographs.
Currency
Declare amounts equivalent to or exceeding €10,000 in any currency.
Form available in Portuguese. Totals include traveller-cheques.
Gifts/Goods
Combined value up to €500 for passengers over 15 years.
Electronics count toward the limit and may be assessed on spot.

  • Narcotics and recreational drugs, zero tolerance, immediate arrest.
  • Meat and dairy from non-EU countries, foot-and-mouth precautions.
  • Counterfeit currency and pirated media, confiscated on sight.

Restricted Items

  • Yellow fever, only if arriving from a country with risk within last 12 days.

Recommended Vaccinations

  • Hepatitis An and B, Typhoid for adventurous eaters
  • Routine boosters: MMR, DPT, flu

Health Insurance

Health insurance is not mandatory. But medical evacuation is a splurge; mid-range travel policies covering emergency flights to Canary Islands are strongly advised.

Current Health Requirements: COVID-19 testing or vaccination proof suspended since July 2022; reinstated rules would be announced on Sal airport website first, then mirrored in Praia within 48 h.
